Sucralose: These foods contain sucralose (E955)

Sucralose is used as an artificial sweetener in food and drink to provide sweetness without calories. It is added to products such as soft drinks, yoghurt, chewing gum, desserts, and other sugar-free sweets.

The substance is produced by chemically modifying sugar molecules so that the body cannot break it down for energy. The result is an extremely sweet substance, up to 600 times sweeter than regular sugar, but without any calorific value.

The addition of sucralose makes foods ultra-processed because it is a synthetically produced additive used to mimic sweetness, rather than providing natural flavour and calories.

Several studies indicate that the substance can affect the stomach, including the gut flora. An Italian study from 2016 showed that the substance caused leukaemia and other forms of blood cancer in male mice.
