Maltodextrin is a white powder made from starch derived from sources such as maize, potato, rice, wheat or tapioca. It is produced industrially using water, acids and enzymes that break down the starch into shorter chains of glucose. The result is an easily soluble carbohydrate with a neutral taste and a high glycaemic index.

Maltodextrin is used in many processed foods and beverages, including sauces, snacks, sports products and confectionery. It is added to improve texture, provide bulk or sweetness, or bind ingredients together. It may also be used as an energy source in sports drinks and dietary supplements.

There are two main types of maltodextrin: one that is rapidly digested and provides energy (digestible maltodextrin), and one that is not digested but functions as fibre (resistant maltodextrin). The two types differ in chemical structure and nutritional effect.

Digestible maltodextrin can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar, and people with diabetes or insulin resistance should take note. Resistant maltodextrin may support gut health by promoting beneficial gut bacteria, but in some individuals it can also cause mild digestive discomfort such as bloating.
