Refined Palm Oil: These foods contain refined palm oil

Palm oil, or palm fat, is a vegetable oil extracted by boiling and pressing the pulp of the fruit from the African oil palm, Elaeis guineensis.

Palm oil is controversial both due to its high content of unhealthy fats and because rainforests are destroyed to make room for plantations for palm oil production.

The fruit contains 20–35 percent fat. Palm fat is usually yellow in colour and contains some free fatty acids, but mainly consists of glycerides of palmitic and oleic acids. Nearly half of the fat consists of the saturated fatty acid palmitic acid.

Vegetable oils do not in themselves cause a product to be classified as ultra-processed. However, unlike oils such as rapeseed and sunflower, which are often cold-pressed, industrial palm oil is in most cases heavily chemically refined. It is also a cheap filler ingredient. Therefore, we regard palm oil as a clear indication of an ultra-processed product in The Food App.
